Guide

Use your iPhone as an external drive for your Mac.

Carry files on your iPhone and open them on any Mac as a disk, without a cloud in between.

Where the files live

DiskBeam's Inbox is a folder on your iPhone.

Everything in DiskBeam's Inbox is in the Files app under On My iPhone › DiskBeam. Put files there from the Files app, or copy them in from a Mac. With DiskBeam Pro you can share any other folder, or a drive plugged into your iPhone, instead.

Open it on a Mac

The same four steps on any Mac.

  1. Open DiskBeam on your iPhone and tap Turn on disk. Allow Local Network when iPhone asks.
  2. On your Mac, in Finder, choose Go › Connect to Server (⌘K) and paste the address DiskBeam shows.
  3. The first time, your Mac asks about the iPhone's certificate. Click Show Certificate, check that the code matches the one in DiskBeam, then click Continue.
  4. Choose Registered User, enter the name and password from DiskBeam, and tick Remember this password.

Your iPhone now opens as a disk in Finder, in the sidebar under Locations.

Good to know

Encrypted

The connection is encrypted and needs your password, so it's fine on a shared Wi-Fi.

As fast as the link

Speed depends on the connection: your iPhone's hotspot or a cable is often faster than a busy home Wi-Fi.

Keep it on screen

iPhone pauses the disk in the background and continues when you return to DiskBeam.

Questions

How much can I store?

As much as your iPhone has free. DiskBeam shows the free space in Sources, and Finder shows it for the disk too.

Does the Mac need an app?

No. Finder's Connect to Server is all it needs.

Open your iPhone in Finder

Get DiskBeam, turn on the disk and press ⌘K on your Mac.
